Color and Finishing

Firstly, you have to understand that finishing of the dining table affects the color. Therefore, color comes from finishing, not the other way round. In order to understand further, you need to read this article completely. Also, in most cases, wood finishing is our biggest concern.

Wood finishing

When the manufacturer applies finishing onto the wood, there are 3 main benefits for the dining table.

If you think that applying wax or oil finish only protects your dining table, think again. Whenever you apply a finish onto your wood, you are actually coloring your wood. In other words, you are decorating your wooden dining table.

Color

When you apply color, you are actually staining the wood. Staining is a term that means the action of applying color to the wood.

Texture

If you look closely at any wood type, you will notice the thin and fine lines called grains. Sometimes, these grains are wavy or straight or even randomly shaped. When a woodworker applies light wood finishing, he is actually preserving the texture of these wood grains.

Sheen

When someone says wood sheen, he or she is telling you the amount of gloss that a finish has. The higher the sheen, the more glossy the wood.

Ensure the wood is clean

Applying wood finishing also cleans the wood. This is done by sanitizing the wood with finishing. If a wooden dining table is not finished properly, the wood pores can accumulate dirt and thus provide a breeding ground for bacteria. In a way, finishing protects the wood from becoming dirty.

Stabilize the wood

Did you know that wood can absorb and release moisture? In addition, not all woods exhibit the same behaviour. For example, a dry wood is not suitable for places with high moisture content; it will swell and deform. The same goes to a "wet" wood that is placed in a dry climate; it will shrink. This is important because moisture content can cause problems like cracking, splitting and warping of the wood. Therefore, finishing helps prevents this problem.
