You may not have heard about flip top dining tables before. But they are essentially tables
that can convert their tabletop size from small to large and vice versa by unfolding a second tabletop layer on top
of the existing one.
In the market, they commonly have light to mid brown wood finish. Another popular color would be black.
2 Types
There are mainly 2 types of flip top dining tables. They function the same. There is only one difference, that
is the table dimension.
Square
In this model type, the default (unfolded) tabletop is square. There is a second square tabletop layer on top of
the first one. When you unfold the second layer, your table now has a rectangle shape. Therefore, the square
becomes a rectangle in this case.
Rectangular
Its original shape is the rectangle. Likewise, there exists another layer of rectangular tabletop on top. After
unfolding the second tabletop layer, you will have a wider rectangle table. Therefore, a smaller rectangle becomes
a bigger one here.
Benefits
Saves space. You can convert it into a bigger table anytime you want. When space is limited, keep it closed
(unfolded).
You can use it for a coffee table when it is unfolded. Another great idea is using it as a game, poker or even a
console table. In fact, many people use them for these purposes themselves when it comes to flip top dining tables.
When you need to have dinner or lunch, simply unfold to create a bigger table.
Tips
Make sure the tabletops are lacquered for maximum durability. This way, your table can last many years.
One thing about the price of such a table, it can be very expensive!
There is another extremely important thing to know when handling the flip top kitchen tables. Make sure you
support the second tabletop layer with your other hand as you unfold it. Otherwise, you are letting the hinge
(joints) in the center take all the load, which could lead to damaged joints later in the long run. It could cause
visible lines in the center too.
Here are a couple of short videos on how to use / unfold the square and rectangle flip top tables correctly.
Note how they slide the tabletop first before unfolding it. If you unfold it first, you would have to support
its weight with your hand.
